Golf for the Homeless Community recap

First United offers a very heartfelt thank you to the many sponsors, golfers, volunteers, and supporters of the Silver Wheaton Golf for the Homeless Community tournament held at the University Golf Club.

The golf tournament was a very successful event and we are pleased to announce that together, we raised over $75,000; funds that will be used to support the programs and services of First United, helping those most in need within our community.

The energy leading up to the event was contagious and we were impressed by how quickly the 148 golfing and 180 BBQ banquet dinner registrations sold out.

A full house made for a fun house as golfers embarked on a team spirited round of Texas Scramble.

The morning brought the threat of rain, but blue skies prevailed and golfers were rewarded with a warm afternoon and perfect conditions on the greens.

In the evening, Vancouver Mayor, Gregor Robertson welcomed all and CBC’s Rick Cluff entertained the crowd.

Rev. Ric Matthews moved the dinner guests with his comments on community and said, “People who live at the margins are not confined to geographic areas: they are in our homes and our neighbour’s homes. It is not about a ‘them’ it is about an ‘us’.”

Mario Lima, a First United community member, shared some moving life experiences and expressed what First United meant to him.

The evening featured an exquisite BBQ dinner and a fantastic silent auction showcasing a vast array of products and services generously donated by our local business community.
