Participate by becoming a member of the community.
Contact the office and ask for a guided visit to First United. This will give you a detailed overview of what we do and allow you to identify one or more opportunities for where you might join in.
Sometimes the easiest way to connect is by taking on helping with a particular activity. Some of these include; helping out at coffee time, thrift store and sorting of clothing, day programs, advocacy office reception, foot washing, and completion of income tax forms to name a few. Other such opportunities include:
Thrift Store – Help in our thrift store. Store hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Office Administration – Help at the office reception assisting people with getting their mail, toiletries and chatting with people.
Storage Support – Help staff and other community members utilize the storage facility.
Foot Care – help provide opportunities for people to soak their feet in warm water, Epson salts, and tea tree oil to promote healthier feet.
Program – help facilitate community activities such as Karaoke, resume writing, yoga, cards or board games, Origami, gi gong, tai chi, creative writing, a crib tournament, knitting, beading, drumming circle – or any other activities you might like to suggest.
Hairdresser/Barber – help with the weekly hair cutting session.
Bread Slicer – help in the kitchen.
It really is as easy as just coming along and becoming part of the group. One of the easiest ways is to join us for a Wednesday evening Celebration Service – or come to a meal on any other day and join a table!
As we clarify the new governance structures, there are likely going to be three possibilities for formal membership:
a) You could join First United Church pastoral charge as a member of the United Church of Canada (by transferring your membership or by joining as a new member)
b) You could join the First United Society much like you would join a Rotary or Social Club and keep your simultaneous membership of your own faith community
c) You could do (a) and (b)
